Defining a Mobile Strategy - Part 1

Nowadays, it is a widely known fact that businesses must go mobile. Without a mobile presence, your business will be missing out on a huge chunk of potential customers. But it's not enough to simply "build an app". In order to be successful, you must have a mobile strategy for your business.

What is a mobile strategy?

Consider this analogy: your business is a series of road trips. Every decision made, every project undertaken, is considered one of these road trips. Now, without doing anything else, a road trip can be pretty fun. You might stop at some great places, eat some delicious food, and ultimately make it to your end destination without a hiccup. Or, it may not go so well. You may run out of gas 200 miles away from the nearest gas station. You may get lost outside of cell range and realize you never brought a map. The likelihood of these risks occurring increases as the road trips grow in size.

Now, consider your mobile app to be a road trip. Would you want to embark on a long trip without any planning? Even further, wouldn't you want to plan as much as possible? This plan is your mobile strategy.

How do I define a mobile strategy?

The best way to start defining your mobile strategy is to ask yourself these questions:

  • How do my customers currently interact with my business?

  • What is the current typical customer journey?

  • What is the desired customer journey?

  • How will a mobile app drive users through the desired customer journey?

It is important to note that a mobile strategy is not just an extension of your online strategy. Users do not interact with their phones the same way they interact with their computers. It's also important to note that a mobile strategy is not a technical plan for developing an app (let us do that for you!), but rather a strategic plan for implementing a new customer interaction interface.
